Fiesta in a Glass | The Michelada

Jun 3

Michelada Recipe, Mexican Beer Cocktail, Hello Splendor, Pulp Design Studios, Beer Cocktail, Clamato, Tajin, Bohemia, Cholula, Maggi Seasoning

Everyone is always asking me to share my Michelada recipe and I finally got around to actually measuring out the ingredients.  Since I always just eye ball it and make them to taste I could never share the recipe but now I can share it with you!  If you enjoy bloody mary’s or lime in your beer you will love this Mexican beer cocktail!

What you need…..

1 16oz. Glass or Mug

Ice

1 Mexican Beer (Tecate Light, Corona, Dos Equis Light, Bohemia)

2 tablespoons Fresh Lime Juice (about 1 medium juicy lime)

1 oz. Clamato Juice

2 -3 dashes Cholula Hot Sauce (How hot do you like it?)

2 dashes Maggi Seasoning or Soy Sauce

2 -3 dashes Worcestershire Sauce

Dash of Black Pepper

Pinch of Course Salt

1/2 teaspoon Tajin (BTW this is awesome on fruit, cucumbers, jicama and popcorn)

Add some Tajin to a plate and use for rimming the glasses

Grab a glass and rim the edge with tajin. Add lime, clamato, cholula, maggi, worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper & tajin to glass.  Mix well and add ice, tilt glass slightly and slowly pour beer into glass, stir gently to prevent over fizzing.

Voila…Fiesta in a glass! Enjoy!

Postcards from an aspiring mixologist…

Mar 27

It’s been a while since I’ve done a ‘Postcards From’ post… Quite frankly, Pulp has been cranking along like crazy and I’ve forgotten to check in on a personal level. Sorry about that! When I stepped back to see what I’ve been doing lately, I’ve noticed a common theme (which may have to do with how busy we’ve been): Booze.

Truthfully, I’ve been developing such an interest in the art of the cocktail. Not just drinking it! There’s such a science and art behind making a cocktail. I’ve purchased books, taken classes, and practiced at home…. a lot.

I recently took a bitters making class at The Pantry at Delancey with bartending genius Anna Wallace to learn how to make my own bitters at home… Different flavors & different concoctions! I learned about all of the medicinal properties of different bitters. If you tell me a cocktail is medicine, I’ll listen… and drink it… for my health.

I had a partner in crime, Keli of drygoods design, who is a fellow boozer! (Check out her fun shop, and if you’re in Seattle check out her new studio & classes.)

Since I learned so much about bitters in this class I decided to start tasting some new bitters & vermouths (which is actually considered a bitter). Dolin Dry Vermouth on the rocks with a twist…. delicious, and perfect for drinking while cooking.

Cocchi Vermouth di Torrino with soda & and orange twist… So refreshing and quite the aperitif!

Two weeks later, I’ve gotten to Step Two of making my own bitters… Liquid, solids, and homemade simple syrup. And, in one week, they’ll all become one. I’ll let you know how it goes!

And, since I made simple syrup for this little project, I just had to find a drink to make with it! So, in celebration of cousin Vinny Dotolo’s restaurant making the cover of Bon Appetit magazine, I whipped up some New York Sours from page 100. You’ve got to try it!

Now…. My question for you is:

Would you enjoy learning about cocktails along with me? Would you like to learn how to make bitters… and about different types of ice and tools… and when to shake and when to stir??

If so, let me know by commenting below. If there’s enough interest, I’ll start a little series here. I’d love for you to learn how to entertain beautifully along with me!

postcards from new york city…

Jan 21

Our first night in NYC.

The view from our hotel room… classic NYC.

The Pulp offices for the morning while we plot our meetings.

Fueling for a day of meetings and design at Momofuku Noodle Bar.

A must-visit home shop… ABC Carpet & Home.

A clever banquette at Vive La Crepe.

An amazing post-dinner view of the Chrysler Building from the rooftop of one of our Pulp Home collaborative partner’s apartments.

You’ve gotta love Gotham City at night.

A perfect day for client shopping and meetings in SoHo.

The New Traditionalists is a favorite and it was great to get into their showroom.

Ankasa is just an amazing brand that has almost endless custom options.

Carolina scoping all the goodies at Michele Varian‘s incredible shop.

After a long day… dinner at Freeman’s. An NYC must for us.

Me showing Carolina the ropes of taking the subway… after a huge meeting we had for the Pulp brand!

Carolina’s very first Subway ride in NYC… I don’t think she was too fond of it.

A quick stop at M&J Trimmings! Overwhelmingly amazing details.

If you haven’t guessed yet, we love to eat. We stopped in at Forcella for a slice.

And, finished the night off with a drink and some business talk… which usually contains this classic stare down.

And, always ends with smiles.

The next day, Carolina headed back to Dallas to meet with clients and finalize some designs… While I stayed in the city to celebrate my 5 year wedding anniversary and finish up some important business.

We had a great trip, with lots of successful meetings for the Pulp brand… And, we ate our little hearts out in one of the greatest cities there is. Look for some of the fruits of our labor here in New York City very soon!

Sit + Sip : The Menning Mimosa

Jan 10

New Years Eve is over but I still have champagne on the mind.  Maybe it’s because I still have some left over bottles and I don’t want them to go to waste.  When in doubt go with a classic Menning Mimosa which is a great pair to any brunch.  This gorgeous Maya Armchair from Brabbu reminds me of that sweet cocktail with its golden velvet and channel upholstered back.  Perfect to snuggle up in to read a book or sip champagne.

What are you doing with your leftover bottles of bubbly?
